NCNW Barbara Jordan Houston Section Celebrates 22 Years of Service and Community Leadership

The National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) Barbara Jordan Houston Section celebrated its 22nd Anniversary Honors Luncheon on Saturday, March 14, 2026, with an inspiring and memorable gathering of community leaders, supporters, and partners. Held at The Ballroom at Tanglewood, the event welcomed 250 attendees, reaching full capacity and reflecting the tremendous community support for the organization’s mission and impact.

The celebratory luncheon was filled with energy, unity, and recognition of excellence as guests gathered to honor individuals whose leadership and service continue to strengthen the Houston community. The program highlighted the legacy and vision of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, founder of the National Council of Negro Women, who envisioned an organization where Black women from all walks of life could come together, be represented, and have a seat at the table.

The Barbara Jordan Houston Section was originally organized in 2004 by Ms. Jackie Pope, the 11th Past National President of Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc. and a member of the Missouri City/Space City Houston Chapter. Since its founding, the section has grown into a vibrant organization dedicated to advocacy, community service, leadership development, and collaboration among organizations committed to uplifting communities.

Today, the section is led by President Bessie Fletcher, who also serves as the current President of the Diamond Dynasty Gulf Coast Chapter of Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc. Under her leadership, the organization continues to expand its impact through partnerships, community engagement, and programs focused on education, health equity, social justice, and economic empowerment.

In tribute to the section’s namesake, the late Congresswoman Barbara Jordan, a historic Texas trailblazer, constitutional scholar, award-winning orator, and champion of justice, the organization presented the Barbara Jordan Community Impact Award to eight outstanding leaders whose work reflects her legacy of courage and service.
